Patient Testimonials
I travel from 2 hours away to see the doctors at this office. I have been going there for all my dental care since they took a tooth out for me years ago. All the doctors and staff are great and I will happily continue to drive two hours to see them. Keep up the good work guys!

I hadn't been to the dentist in a while and since nothing hurt, I figured everything was fine. Boy was I wrong! I woke up one day with so much pain so I called the good folks at Urgent Dental Care and they got me in immediately... A great team and a great office for everything you need.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Even if you are very thorough with your dental care and brush and floss regularly, you are likely going to have to face the reality of getting at least one cavity over your lifetime, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the past, amalgam fillings were the medium of choice for filling in those spots of decay on a tooth. Made up of a variety of metals, amalgam fillings did the trick in stopping the decay from growing, but they were not very subtle. Their dark gray color was quite noticeable in the mouth.

Composite tooth-colored fillings are taking the place of amalgam fillings in almost all instances. Made up of tiny glass or quartz particles, these are made to blend in with the color of the tooth they are filling. Most people won’t even know they are there.

If you think you might have a cavity, call or come into Urgent Dental Care of New Hampshire. Our dentists can tell you more about tooth-colored fillings.

Why We Like Tooth-Colored Fillings

Because of their esthetic benefit, tooth-colored fillings are ideal for cavities that occur closer to the front of the mouth. Made to match the color of your natural teeth, they blend in seamlessly.

The composite material is quite versatile, and it is also useful for repairing cracks and chips in teeth.

In addition to esthetics, there are other benefits to composite fillings:

  • Less preparation of the decayed tooth is needed before the filling is placed, which means a quicker procedure and preservation of more of your natural tooth structure.
  • The composite material is not as prone to contraction and expansion from hot or cold liquids, which means there is less chance of fracture.
  • Composite fillings are strong because they bond to the tooth structure, giving it additional support.

Caring for Tooth-Colored Fillings

There are no special considerations for caring for your tooth-colored fillings. After your decayed tooth has been filled with the resin composite, you can simply brush and floss the area as you always would. Be sure to visit your dentist twice each year for regular examinations and cleanings; we also recommend you have x-rays done once each year.

Some patients report feeling some sensitivity in the filling area after they have their new composite filling. This is totally normal and almost always goes away on its own after a bit of time. Some patients benefit from using a de-sensitizing toothpaste until the sensitivity has dissipated. We also recommend that you avoid hot or cold liquids for the time being if they are what is causing the area to be sensitive.

If the sensitivity does not go away by itself, give us a call.
